Career Story Series: Rachel Wilson (Design Engineer)

Through the course of her apprentice programme, Rachel received on-the-job training and obtained a Higher National Certificate (HNC) with distinctions. She has been in her full-time role as Fire Suppression Design Engineer for over two years now, and is currently designing sprinkler systems to keep buildings and their occupants safe.

Looking back at all the hard work over the past few years, Rachel feels proud of her accomplishments. “My biggest satisfaction is seeing how I’ve progressed and how my confidence and independence have grown. From being told what to do to now being consulted for advice, I’m happy with the progress I’ve made.”

Career Story: Levi Gibbs (Field Installation Technician)

Levi’s role as an apprentice engineer required him to work on customers’ sites. He said, “I like being on-site and working at different locations, not sitting at the computer all day long.

Asked about what he thinks about the apprenticeship he undertook for over two years, Levi said, “The relationship I built with my colleagues was great. We had a laugh every day that kept morale up. I also built trust in myself that I know I can do the job well.

Did he ever come across any challenges? Levi said, “Maybe a bit on the technical side. But it only takes a minute to learn. It just comes naturally now and you get to love it.
